Act:

Alignment

Staying on Course

academy

Answers: Am I going the right direction?

Constant course correction. This is about making sure the path you’re on is the right path and identifying any adjustments that might need to be made so that answer is always an absolute “YES”!

Lesson 1

INTRODUCTION

course objectives

  • Assess if you are in alignment or out of alignment
  • Understand if “best practices” are still “best” for you
  • Describe the importance of alignment to what matters most
  • Discern when to choose inefficiency over efficiency to stay aligned

Learning Objectives

What we align to in lifeeither intentionally or not, can help propel us forward along our Journey to Purpose, or derail, slow, or even stop us altogether.

By the end of this course, you’ll learn how to tell if you’re in alignment or out of alignment, if so-called “best practices” are still best for you, and when to intentionally choose inefficiency over efficiency to stay aligned with what matters most.

choosing your path

We use the word “normal” to mean all kinds of things including “right” or “correct.” Normal actually means what most people are doing and what has become the accepted thing to do. Pushing against norms is not always “wrong, its just outside of what most people do or think.

Consider those times you were outside the norm as you complete the activity below.

Think of a situation where others were clear on what the “normal” thing to do was, but you chose a different path.

Lesson 2

WHAT ARE YOU ALIGNED TO?

GO FAST. TURN LEFT.

Racing cars is an apt metaphor for Alignment. Just as the car must be in alignment to succeed in a particular race, we, too, must align our identity, objectives, and plans to succeed in life.

Lesson 3

THE PERSISTENT AND THE NORMAL

THE FOUR TYPES

Alignment is either intentional or accidental, and either fleeting or persistent. The goal is to be intentionally and persistently aligned with your objectives.

intention and persistence

Take a moment and think about how your actions are aligned with your identity. Are you being intentional or accidental? Do your wins seem fleeting or are you persistent at sensing your needs and making corrections?

Explore these questions in the activity below.

Rate where you generally fall when it comes to working toward your objectives. What can you stop, start, or continue doing to ensure alignment?

ALIGNING TO “NORMAL”

“Normal” is a socially constructed concept of what acceptable standards are, and it is often unrealistic. We should be conscious of the pressure to align ourselves with this so called “normal.”

“Normal” Jobs

At work there are many points of view that are either in alignment or out of alignment with each other. When you think about what you align with, it’s useful to consider other perspectives. Over time the basis of many different jobs has been normalized, which isn’t necessarily good or bad.

Look at the jobs types in the following activity and consider whether you align with “normal” or “different” points of view.

Let’s look at Alignment, support, and norms in the context of jobs. The following list contains some examples of what some might consider “normal” or something we should “align” with or support.
Check the jobs you’d NOT be okay aligning with. (1 of 3)

Lesson 4

BEST PRACTICES AND NORMS

WHEN BEST PRACTICES AREN’T

Some “best practices” are timeless, but others may change. Which “best practices” are you currently aligned with?

BREAKING FROM THE NORMS

Knowing what norms we’re aligned to and why can help us be intentional about choosing a new path forward… or not, if it takes us away from our identity and Journey to Purpose.

Ultimately the choice, and the consequences, are ours.

THE LURE OF EFFICIENCY

Sometimes, it’s necessary to choose a path that may seem inefficient in order to align ourselves with our identity and purpose.

Necessary Inefficiency

Concepts reflected in the 16 Elements like growth, impact, alignment, momentum, plan and relationships almost always take a lot of time, resources, and attention. This means they’re not that efficient, but they are important.

Consider the ways you align with your Journey to Purpose in the activity below.

Lesson 5

THE JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF ME

ALIGNING WITHIN

Alignment within is as important as alignment without. When we know our purpose, values, and objectives, we can more easily align with the right things on our Journey to Purpose.

THE JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF ME

If you haven’t done so already, take the “New Boots,” “Choose to Thrive,” and “Identity Builder” experiences in your Academy. These three experiences will generate your initial Identity Finder, which is the foundation for guiding Elements like Alignment.

You’ll find context, insight, and courage into what you will stand for and what you will stand against regardless of what “norms” others are aligning with.

Lesson 6

CONCLUSION

TRUE TO IDENTITY

As we learn to align ourselves with the people and things that help us along our Journey to Purpose we are being true to our Identity and will experience more success, fulfillment, growth, and even joy along the way.
